Go Firefox!

I recently added Mint 13 to my former Vista Machine which now also runs Windows 7. Mint seemed to have installed fine and I was able to run the MDN ProfileManager for Firefox (still having issues getting it to work for Thunderbird, but not that big of a deal). Everything seemed fine until one night my wireless internet adapter was giving me troubles on my main Windows 7 machine. Since Linux does not support most wireless adapters I was going to boot into Windows on the other machine and see if I could get the adapter to work on that…

Change Spellcheck Language

Recently there was post in Go Firefox! in which the user had installed the British English Dictionary add-on but the spellchecker was still using the US English dictionary. There is an additional step once you have installed the new dictionary add-on and restarted Firefox. You need to tell Firefox which dictionary it should be using. While, you can install as many different dictionaries as you like (as seen in the example below), you can only use one at a given time. Right-click in a text-area Select Languages Select the Dictionary you want to use

Firefox 4 Update Issues

Some people at Go Firefox! have reported some issues when attempting to upgrade from Firefox 3.6.16 to Firefox 4 on Windows. A couple I have seen include: Error 0x00000004 in firefox.exe Reboot required to complete update. User get this message when attempting to launch or uninstall Firefox via Windows Control Panel. In both cases firefox.exe or one of it components got corrupted during the update. To fix this issue follow these steps to manually remove the damaged Firefox and to install fresh: Got to getfirefox.com and download (do not run) Firefox 4 Close Firefox Locate your Firefox install folder. Default…

Why Firefox 4 isn’t abandoning Windows XP

gareon posted this article at Go Firefox! as a follow up to the article earlier this week on how IE9 does not support Windows XP. …More than 40 percent of web users are still on Windows XP. And that’s the first thing Firefox engineering director Johnathan Nightingale brought up when I asked him about the issue. In an ironic twist, Mozilla’s upcoming Firefox 4is supporting not only Microsoft’s Windows XP but also Windows 2000, even though Microsoft’s new browser doesn’t. “That’s a decision that they get to make, but it sure did surprise us, because the best metrics that we’ve…

Beware of Fake Update Page

Recently there has been a fake Firefox update page (see below) has been floating around the web. This page not only tells the user they are running an out-dated version of Firefox, but that they need to update Adobe Flash Player as well. There is a link to “update” Adobe Flash Player but this is actually a malicious link: The download starts automatically. Save and run it and you get a rogue antivirus product named “SecurityTool” which starts finding threats which aren’t there and demanding payment in order to remove them. With the recent increase in Firefox updates (especially for…

IE Tab +

Support for the ‘original’ IE Tab ended with Firefox 3.5 in June 2009. I believe it was through Go Firefox! I learned about IE Tab +. The extension not only supports Firefox 3.6 but also has an integrated version of AdBlock Plus that will work within the IE Tab. IE Tab + works with Firefox 3.6 and 4.0 (32-bit only). Update: 03/15/2011 IE Tab + (not to be confused with IE Tab Plus) supports Firefox 3.6 and newer

Win XP Users: IE Can Be Hazardous to Firefox

Below is part of an article Gareon had posted on Go Firefox! Although I live in Windows, I avoid Internet Explorer - its the Defensive Computing thing to do. My approach is the same as Steve Gibson’s, we run IE once a month to install Microsoft patches, then ignore it until next month. Not too long ago, on his Security Now! podcast, Gibson suggested further protection from IE by setting both the Internet and Intranet zones to “High” security levels. What the heck, I figured, an extra bit of safety can’t hurt. But it did hurt, and thus, this blog…

New Contributor: Gareon

When I started this blog nearly 5-years ago I would have no idea how much it would grow. I spend a lot of my time breaking testing Firefox and many of the posts lately have been more technical or release news related. I am still quite active over on Go Firefox! and have been seeing a lot great news items being posted over there. I keep making notes to myself to post those articles on the blog, but just either get too caught up working on something else or just don’t have the time. I’ve known Gareon for some time…

You would think Microsoft would have learned its lesson after all the negative backlash with the Microsoft .NET Spyware Extension. But this is Microsoft we are talking about. Earlier today I got an odd pop-up window from Firefox: The Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in has been disabled for your protection. Several people on Go Firefox! have reported getting the same message. From what I have read this plug-in that allows the embedding of XAML applications (an XML-based UI technology) in web pages, called XBAP and is part of the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a security hole was…

Fire.fm

Once again I have found another great add-on thanks to Gareon at GoFirefox! Last week he had posted a link to the article Mashable: 16 Great Music Add-Ons for Firefox. I had commented about FoxyTunes being one of the 16 and he mentioned he was trying out Fire.fm. The add-on allows you to control Last.fm (player) from within Firefox without having to have it opened in its own tab. When I first installed the add-on I was not too happy as it added the Fire.fm toolbar to my browser. I didn’t like this taking up my screen-space (not that it…
