Thunderbird 8

Starting with Thunderbird 9.0 Beta 3 (released November 25, 2011) hardware acceleration is now turned off by default. While the premise was good to allow Thunderbird 5.0 and newer to utilize video hardware acceleration, for many user it caused issues including blurry fonts. Thunderbird 9 Beta can be downloaded from the Mozilla Thunderbird builds page.

No Thunderbird 8.0.1

There has been some confusion as to what is the most current version of Thunderbird. Thunderbird 8.0 released on November 8, 2011 is the most current version of Thunderbird. Mozilla did release an update for Firefox (8.0.1) on November 21st, 2011. However, the issues that were addressed in this update (older version of RoboForm caused browser to crash on start-up and crashing issues with JAVA heavy sites on Mac with Firefox 8.0) were related to Firefox only. Therefore Mozilla did not do a Thunderbird 8.0.1 update. At this time it does not appear there will be any other Thunderbird updates…

Much like Firefox, there are some unofficial 64-Bit builds for Thunderbird. They can be found here. However, at this time the most latest version is Thunderbird 7.0.0 (release is 8.0.0). As with any other developmental build, use at your own risk and ideally with a separate profile (this where ProfileMaanger can come in handy). Thanks to Bob Slim for the tip.

Bug 701875 was created a few days ago to address a major issue with Windows and Gecko 2.0 (Firefox 4.0+/Thunderbird 5.0+). omni.jar is a core file for Gecko 2.0 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. From MDN: Firefox 4 and Thunderbird 3.3 achieve performance improvements by moving many of their internal parts from being standalone files or sets of JAR files into just one JAR file called omni.jar; this reduces the amount of I/O needed to load the application. This issue is no fault of Mozilla’s rather Microsoft Windows. It seems the Window’s System Restore does not backup .jar files. Trying…

Important: At least in the Thunderbird 11 Daily builds, you will need to manually update Lightning by going the the Calendar Versions page then down and install the correct version. As mentioned earlier this week Mozilla Lightning, the Thunderbird Calendar add-on had been updated for Thunderbird 8. The Calendar Versions page on MDN now shows new versions (with an entirely new numbering scheme) of Lightning for the upcoming (channel merges are still in progress) Thunderbird 9 Beta, Thunderbird 10 Earlybird and Thunderbird 11 Daily builds. As odd as the old numbering scheme was, it did sort of make sense (compared…

Thunderbird 8 Coming/What’s New

Thunderbird 8 comes out later today and there are some minor changes. Some good and some not so good. Add-ons check first run. On your first run after you have updated to Thunderbird 8, you are going to see an add-ons screen similar to that below. This will let you know which add-ons are currently installed, if they are compatible (or can be updated) and who installed them note add-ons installed by 3rd party programs will be disabled by default) . Further, you have an option to choose to keep the installed add-on or remove it (always good to do…

Lightning, the integrated Calendar add-on for Thunderbird has been updated for the upcoming Thunderbird 8 release on November 8th. Lightning 1.0 only works on Thunderbird 8 Beta or Release version. Thunderbird 7 user can still add Lightning, but will need to add Lightning 1.0b7 from the Version History section on the Lightning AMO page.
