Some updates in regards to the Mozilla to Block Older Version of Java Plugins post from earlier this week… Firstly, Apple has released a security update that fixes the security vulnerability in Java. All Mac OS X users should run Software Update and update their Java software as soon as possible. It should be noted that we haven’t blocklisted Java on Mac OS X yet, but we might do so in the following days. If we do so, it will be softblocked, meaning that you still have the choice to keep the plugin enabled. Secondly, we made a mistake that…
Mozilla has announced they will be blocking older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Java Development Kit (JDK) plugins due to critical vulnerabilities that are being exploited. This vulnerability—present in the older versions of the JDK and JRE—is actively being exploited, and is a potential risk to users. To mitigate this risk, we have added affected versions of the Java plugin for Windows (Version 6 Update 30 and below as well as Version 7 Update 2 and below) to Firefox’s blocklist. A blocklist entry for the Java plugin on OS X may be added at a future date….

I am hearing, but can not see any information that there was an update pushed out for Mac users (likely a result of the crash issues upon startup with Firefox 9.0 release) earlier today. Though checking the Mozilla site and FTP site, the latest I am seeing for Mac (and for Windows and Linux) is 9.0.0 release from yesterday. Any Mac users on Firefox 9.0.0 (or even 8.0.1), could y’all go to Help > About Firefox and see if it offers you an update to 9.0.1 build. Update (2:10 PST): Looks like it scheduled for public release later today as…
The ‘patch’ mentioned earlier this week has landed on the Aurora (Firefox 10) and Beta (Firefox 9) channels on December 9, 2011. Mac users on OS X 10.6/10.7 using Firefox 8.0.1, will likely still need to wait until the Firefox 9.0 release on December 20, 2011 to see this patch. However, Bug 705931 is still showing open which means that the developers are still trying to test to see if this patch will resolve the JAVA crash issue.
Some clarification is needed here as to which versions of OS X are affected. Apple did not update Java on OS X 10.5 so there is no crash bug associated with this version. However, the latest Java update by Apple on OS X 10.6 and 10.7 is triggering this crash,
I knew it seemed like things were a bit too quiet. Turns out, the email stopped working Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Last night I started getting some emails on Bug 701537 (Tracking bug for build and release of Firefox 8.0.1). The first was the addition (and shortly there after the deletion) of dependency on Bug 705931 ([Mac] Firefox 8.0.1 crashes when many Java applets are loaded). Reading into Bug 701537, I noticed several comments from November 25th that I never got the notification emails on. Anyway, long story short, there is still an outstanding Bug (seems the finger is…
