New to Thunderbird 45 is the addition of Correspondents column combining Sender and Recipient with an arrow on the left side of the email address. This ‘feature’ was request about 16-years ago (read all about it in Bug 36489). As I mentioned in the previous post, it is not the name change that bothers me, rather it is the arrow that was added. Mozilla released the next major update for Thunderbird on April 12th, 2016. Thunderbird 45. There are many changes and fixes in this version which can be viewed in the Release Notes. One of the most noticeable changes is the addition of Correspondents column combining Sender and Recipient with an arrow on the left side of the email address. Mozilla released an update to the Thunderbird 38.5.x branch on January 7th, 2016. Thunderbird 38.5.1 is for Windows users and implemented using a SHA-256 signing certificate for Windows builds, to meet new signing requirements. This was the final step of the replacing the now deprecated (as of 01/01/2016) SHA-1 signing certificates. Windows XP SP2 users: You can not update from Thunderbird 38.4.0 (or older) to 38.5.0 automatically. You will need to manually download and install Thunderbird 38.5.0 from here and then update to the current version of Thunderbird. If you have been trying to import your emails from MS Eudora or Outlook with the current Thunderbird 38.x branch you likely have run into problems. According to Bug 1176748, this functionality was disabled as it broke the Thunderbird 38 branch. There is however, a simple fix and that is to temporarily install Thunderbird 31.8.0 (or Thunderbird 17.8.0), import then update to the current Thunderbird 38.x branch. One catch though, this only works for Outlook. Thunderbird 38.4.0 was suppose to be released in early November. Here we are at almost the end of November and still no Thunderbird 38.4.0 release. Reviewing the Status Meeting Notes from the November 17th meeting this build is still ‘in progress’. Also been following the Build Notes for Thunderbird 38.4.0 which currently shows they are the third build (attempt) at releasing Thunderbird 38.4.0, but still running into issues. The next status meeting will be on November 30th and hopefully will provide some insight if there is going to be a 38.4.0 release or wait until mid December 2015 to release…
Thunderbird 38.4.0 has not yet been released. Reviewing the notes from the status meeting on November 3rd, the release was planned for around November 5th. This delay is not unusual and likely we will be seeing the Thunderbird 38.4.0 release during this coming week. While going through the meeting notes did notice bug 1211160 which had to do with ‘some’ users who updated to Thunderbird 38.3 with Lightning 4.0.3 enabled lost use of the buttons in Thunderbird. Users reported that rolling back to Thunderbird 38.2.0 resolved the issue. Other uses reported success by disabling Lightning 4.0.3 prior to updating to the…
The “Hibernation Bugs‘ which affected Thunderbird’s ability to fetch new mail as well as Lightning after coming out of hibernation (or sleep) have been fixed and will be included in the Thunderbird 38.3.0 release on Tuesday, September 22nd.
There are a couple issues with Thunderbird 38.2.0 when starting up from a long sleep or hibernate (especially overnight). First is Bug 1196662 Thunderbird not checking for mails and becomes unresponsive after hibernation (problem is caused by upgrade to Thunderbird 38.2.0). While I have not experienced issues Thunderbird becoming unresponsive I have noticed I need to click the ‘Get Messages Button’ in order to ‘kick-start’ Thunderbird to periodically and automatically check for new messages. CHANGED: Hardware acceleration is now disabled by default to avoid crashing Thunderbird FIXED: A few bugs have been fixed to avoid crashing Thunderbird UNRESOLVED: The “maildir” storage type can no longer be set through the UI due to various issues.
