New to Thunderbird 45 is the addition of Correspondents column combining Sender and Recipient with an arrow on the left side of the email address. This ‘feature’ was request about 16-years ago (read all about it in Bug 36489). As I mentioned in the previous post, it is not the name change that bothers me, rather it is the arrow that was added. Mozilla released an update to the Thunderbird 38.5.x branch on January 7th, 2016. Thunderbird 38.5.1 is for Windows users and implemented using a SHA-256 signing certificate for Windows builds, to meet new signing requirements. This was the final step of the replacing the now deprecated (as of 01/01/2016) SHA-1 signing certificates. Windows XP SP2 users: You can not update from Thunderbird 38.4.0 (or older) to 38.5.0 automatically. If you have been trying to import your emails from MS Eudora or Outlook with the current Thunderbird 38.x branch you likely have run into problems. According to Bug 1176748, this functionality was disabled as it broke the Thunderbird 38 branch. There is however, a simple fix and that is to temporarily install Thunderbird 31.8.0 (or Thunderbird 17.8.0), import then update to the current Thunderbird 38.x branch. Well, I discovered on Monday (November 17th) Google changed the calendar sign-in API. This now breaks the older version of the Provider for Google Calendar add-on. However, I was able to get all my calendars to work (for the most part) with Thunderbird/Lightning now. I linked/subscribed my school and US Holiday calendars to my main GMail account. The setup process is much simpler now with the newer version of Provider for Google Calendar. You no longer need to supply your calendar’s public/private XML address. The developer has attempted to make setting up your Google Calendars in Lightning easier with the 1.0.x versions of Provider for Google Calendar. Unfortunately, this change may not work with certain Google Calendars. The new setup process simply wants the email address associated with your Google Calendar (instead of using the Calendar or Private addresses). While this worked for my main calendar directly tied to a real Gmail address, it did not work for my school calendar. Mozilla has pushed out an emergency update to Thunderbird 31.1.0 on Tuesday, September 9th. Thunderbird 31.1.1 addressed two critical bugs: Bug 1060901 - Mailing Lists with Spaces in the Name Bug 1005336 - Occasional Startup Crash Depending on the users update settings, they will be prompted to install the Thunderbird Update or may do so via Help > About Thunderbird. Users can also download and manually install the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird via getthunderbird.com site.
