Help/Support

New to Thunderbird 45 is the addition of Correspondents column combining Sender and Recipient with an arrow on the left side of the email address. This ‘feature’ was request about 16-years ago (read all about it in Bug 36489). As I mentioned in the previous post, it is not the name change that bothers me, rather it is the arrow that was added. After some reading the later comments I found out the ‘From’ column was not removed, simply hidden and replaced by Correspondents. The fix to this is very easy and it does not involve add-ons or even custom CSS coding: Right-click anywhere on…

Thunderbird 38.5.1 Released

Mozilla released an update to the Thunderbird 38.5.x branch on January 7th, 2016. Thunderbird 38.5.1 is for Windows users and implemented using a SHA-256 signing certificate for Windows builds, to meet new signing requirements. This was the final step of the replacing the now deprecated (as of 01/01/2016) SHA-1 signing certificates. Windows XP SP2 users: You can not update from Thunderbird 38.4.0 (or older) to 38.5.0 automatically. You will need to manually download and install Thunderbird 38.5.0 from here and then update to the current version of Thunderbird. Windows Vista/Server 2008 SP2 users: If you are running into issues trying to install Thunderbird…

If you have been trying to import your emails from MS Eudora or Outlook with the current Thunderbird 38.x branch you likely have run into problems. According to Bug 1176748, this functionality was disabled as it broke the Thunderbird 38 branch. There is however, a simple fix and that is to temporarily install Thunderbird 31.8.0 (or Thunderbird 17.8.0), import then update to the current Thunderbird 38.x branch. One catch though, this only works for Outlook. Apparently the import functionality for Eudora has not worked in a long time and since it has been almost 10-years since Microsoft ended support for Eudora, Mozilla…

OAuth2 Demonstrated

I had talked about OAuth2 briefly a couple weeks ago, but hadn’t really tried it since my Gmail accounts were already setup in Thunderbird. A few days ago I created another Gmail account to handle everything associated with my Firefox Blog as well as Bugzilla emails. I had been using an @ffextensionguru.com address I had setup up through my hosting provider. The problem is this provider only does POP for free. If I want IMAP support then I needed to upgrade to a business email (5 Boxes with Unlimited Space) for about $96 / year. Since I monitor this email address on…

I reported last week that Windows 10 has changed the way you setup your Default Apps. The biggest change is this has to be done within Windows System Settings, not from within the application. If you attempt to have the application to tell Windows it wants to be the default application you will get this annoying and unhelpful message: For Firefox, Mozilla has implemented a change coming with Firefox 40 that will open the Default Apps setting in Windows 10 when the user tries to make Firefox the default browser within Firefox. This is needed because it appears when a user…

Also introduced in Thunderbird 38 (38.0.1) was the ability to use Maildir mailbox format. Like OAuth2, this too has not been very well documented. I have no idea what this does or why you would want to use it. Further, I have not tried it, especially after I found this information on the Mozilla Wiki with the warning about enabling said feature: Though, we aren’t sure of the side-effects of using maildir as the default store on a profile that was created on Berkeley mailbox(mbox) format; so we suggest you to create a fresh profile to work with maildir so as to avoid…

When Mozilla released Thunderbird 38 (38.0.1) on June 11th one of the new features was being able to use GMail within Thunderbird without having to go into your GMail account and enable the ‘less secure authentication’. Problem is, how to enable this feature in Thunderbird is poorly documented. After some searching, I found the answer in an unlikely place…the comments on the article from The Mozilla Thunderbird Blog announcing Thunderbird 38: In an existing GMail account, you can switch the “Authentication Method” from “Normal Password” to “Oauth2″ (in both the IMAP and SMTP setup separately). Connection security should be SSL/TLS. If…

Update: Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.x

Well, I discovered on Monday (November 17th) Google changed the calendar sign-in API. This now breaks the older version of the Provider for Google Calendar add-on. However, I was able to get all my calendars to work (for the most part) with Thunderbird/Lightning now. I linked/subscribed my school and US Holiday calendars to my main GMail account. The setup process is much simpler now with the newer version of Provider for Google Calendar. You no longer need to supply your calendar’s public/private XML address. Instead, you will be prompted to enter (or choose) the Gmail address associated with your calendar. The next…

Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.x Issues

The developer has attempted to make setting up your Google Calendars in Lightning easier with the 1.0.x versions of Provider for Google Calendar. Unfortunately, this change may not work with certain Google Calendars. The new setup process simply wants the email address associated with your Google Calendar (instead of using the Calendar or Private addresses). While this worked for my main calendar directly tied to a real Gmail address, it did not work for my school calendar. My school calendar is tied to the domain of my college district (maricopa.edu) which uses Google API for email, calendar and other Google services. The problem seems to be…
