Help/Support

Having one of those mornings…was just trying to do some simple updates on the desktop system and opened a can of worms. The newest version of Flash seems to be crashing in Chrome nonstop, but I am hoping a reboot might fix that issue. Did get the JAVA plugins on this machine updated. On this machine I run Thunderbird Beta as my default Thunderbird build, and it updated to Thunderbird 16 Beta when I checked for updates. During the update process I was warned that earlyLight was not compatible and I tried to check for updates, but none were found….

Thunderbird 15 has been released and with that is an update to Lightning to the new 1.7 version which was released a couple days ago. I restarted Thunderbird after the updates and while I had my tasks, I had no calendars. I looked at the add-ons manager and saw I was running Provider for Google Calendar version 0.13 which is the most current release version. I checked under developmental versions and found a link to download the 0.16pre version. Installed this version, restarted and I had my Google Calendars back in Thunderbird. I am not sure if it is the…

Thunderbird 15 is coming out this Tuesday, August 21st and there are a couple User Interface (UI) changes as part of the new Australis UI. The tabs have been redesigned to look like well tabs (similar to what you see in Google Chrome). There has been some other small refinements in appearance of the UI as well. Also, when you are customizing your toolbars, there is no longer an option for ‘small icons’. Note: The ‘small icons’ change currently only affects Windows builds. Linux builds still had the ‘small icons’ option (have not heard about Mac users). Interestingly though, looking on my Windows 7…

Tired of having to update Lightning every six-weeks (especially those of us who are using the Beta and/or Earlybird/Aurora builds of Thunderbird) when the channel merge hits? EarlyLight is the solution. EarlyLight is developed by rkent and is an unofficial build of Lightning that supports both Beta and Earlybird/Aurora builds of Thunderbird as well as the current release version on all operating systems. No more having to download a different version of Lightning for each Thunderbird channel. Note: EarlyLight currently does NOT support Daily Thunderbird Builds. Before you install EarlyLight, a couple things to keep in mind: If you are using Google Calendar(s)…

Modify UI Font Face and Size

It is possible to change the display font and the size of the font on the Thunderbird User Interface. However, it is not something that can be done within Thunderbird. You will need to modify your userChrome.css file within your Thunderbird profile folder. Follow these directions below to make the modifications: From within Thunderbird go to Help > Troubleshooting Information In the Application Basics section next to Profile Folder, click the Show Folder button An Explorer/Kernel Window should open to the location of your profile folder. CLOSE Thunderbird Go the Chrome folder and locate the file userChrome.css and edit. Note: Some installs of Thunderbird may not include a chrome folder. If this the case create…

I really don’t pay that much attention to the tab behavior in Thunderbird. In fact, I don’t really use tabs much I just have my mail in one tab and Lightning.Calendar in another. A user in the forum recently reported an on going issue they have been having with using tabs for RSS feeds in Thunderbird. Besides the content loading slowly, each time they switched away from the tab and then back, they would “lose their place”. At first I thought this was just an issue related to using Thunderbird to handle RSS feeds, something that I never done with…

Thunderbird 11.0.1 Released

Mozilla released an update to Thunderbird 11.0 on March 28th to address a couple pesky bugs: bug 733731 - Fixes an issue that may cause hangs when handling IMAP mail bug 735940 - Fixes an issue that may cause filters that move mail to specific folders to be erronously (sic) changed I had not run into issues with the first bug, but had heard from users who were affected. The second bug, I had run into on the laptop, especially when Thunderbird was trying to re-sync my IMAP accounts upon resuming Windows from hibernate mode. There were a couple times…

A warning to Thunderbird 3.1.x users the last release is coming on April 24 when the 3.1.x branch will finally be retired. This comes nearly a year after Thunderbird 5 was released last spring and is almost twice as long as Mozilla normally continues to provide support of older versions after a major release. Further starting with Thunderbird 13 on June 5, 2012, minimum requirement for Windows will change from Windows 2000 to Windows XP SP2. For organizations or individuals who are not able to update to the newer versions of Thunderbird due to older hardware and/or operating systems, there…

Lightning/Thunderbird 11.0 Issues

Updated Thunderbird on the laptop this morning to the new version 11.0 and noticed Lightning had stopped working. That is normal as whatever version of Lighting is installed only works with one version of Thunderbird. Looked in the add-ons manager and noticed there was an update of Lightning ready to go, just needed to restart Thunderbird for it to install. I tried to restart Thunderbird but noticed even though I had clicked the restart it was still running in the background. After killing the process and restarting Thunderbird it acted like Lightning was not even installed (no calendar options). I…
