Flash Update — Check Your Plugins

Adobe released an update to Flash on February 15th to address an exploit that affected Internet Exploiter users. Even if you don’t use IE, you should still update your Flash plugins. Also this would a good time to check on the ‘health’ of your other Firefox plugins. You can do this from within Firefox by going to Tools > Add-ons and then clicking the link Check to see if your plugins are up to date. This will open the Mozilla plugin checker site in a new tab where a quick scan will tell you which plugins needs to be updated.

Dumb People Fall For Fake Survey

Okay, so it is not true that Dumb People Use IE.Seems this was all a hoax and The Guru fell for it, as did The Seattle PI, CNN, NPR and many more news outlets. Today, AptiQuant – the “company” behind a purported study that recorded which browsers people used to take an online IQ test – posted the following message to its bogus website: AptiQuant was set up in late July 2011 by comparison shopping website AtCheap.com, in order to launch a fake “study” called “Intelligent Quotient and Browser Usage.” The study claimed that people using Internet Explorer have a…

Show Full URLs

Last week a new feature landed on the Firefox 7 Nightly Builds. Bug 665580 removes the ‘https://’ from the address bar and just displays the remainder of the URL and also omitting the trialing /. So in Firefox 7 the blog address would appear in the address bar as blog.ffextensionguru.com (the bolding of the domain name is part of the new Domain Highlighting in Firefox 6). This has seen some interesting discussions in both Firefox Builds and on Bugzilla. It appears Chrome and Opera (but not IE9) are already doing this and of course Firefox has to follow suit now….

Why It Is Important to Update

A Public Service Announcement from the Guru. I am not just talking about Firefox, but more importantly your browser plugins (Flash, JAVA, QuickTime, etc) and yes even those Windows Updates too. The below two articles are from a colleague’s blog Grand Stream Dreams and describes what happens when users continue to use out-dated browsers with out-dated plug-ins. A good lesson here too is don’t be fooled by those security alert warnings advertisements aka scareware. Some folks may find these posts a bit technical, but they do show the amount of the time and work that is involved in fixing an…

Firefox 7 UI Change

Update: First off thanks for the comments. Looks like I missed something, like the fact that I was running Firefox 7 Nightly maximized. Normally I only have the browser window only partial of the screen-width. But this does bring up an interesting question, why not have everything on one row even if the browser window is not maximized? The first screenshot while a partial screen size, is almost 800 pixels wide which would be for those running 800×600 would be maximized. Just seems like wasted space in that title bar. While I was trying out the different versions of Firefox…

A Small Sneak Peek at ‘Windows 8’

Well, this is certainly a major change for the next Windows operating system (code name Windows 8). Yahoo! says the new user interface is a lot like that of the Windows Phone UI. Big design emphasis to run on touch-screen PCs and tablets. However, you will still be able to use the traditional keyboard and mouse. ‘Windows 8’ also uses HTML 5 and JavsScript for many of the apps. The video also talks about the upcoming IE10.

Clear Cache & Cookies - The Easy Way

One question I tend to get a lot is ‘How Do I Clear My Cache and Cookies in Firefox?‘. I will give Microsoft kudos for making this process fairly simple (three steps) in Internet Explorer 9. Mozilla, on the other hand has made the process fairly complicated (more so with the newer Firefox versions). To get to the Clear All History window where you can select to clear cache, cookies and other data: Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4 on Windows XP: Tools > Options > Privacy Tab >Link: clear your recent history. Firefox 4 on Windows Vista and 7: Firefox…

No IE10 for Windows Vista

It seems the preview for IE10 release by Microsoft last week will only work on Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) and the future Windows 8. Microsoft has already shut-out Windows XP users from IE9, so now they are following suit with Vista and the future IE10. The good news here is Firefox 5 (due out in late June) will continue to support Windows Vista and (far as I know) Windows XP. Source: Seattle PI: Microsoft Blog

Okay so Microsoft made a big deal how IE9 had about 2.3 million downloads in the first 24-hours. Firefox 4 in the first 24-hours… over 10 Million downloads. Plus Firefox gained a 2% market share as well. No doubt from all those Windows XP users Microsoft shut-out of IE9. But to be fair, Firefox was also downloaded by Linux and Mac users besides Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003, Vista and 7 users. Microsoft also addressed why it chose to forgo Windows XP support in IE9: The developer community has been vocal that they want to push the Web forward. The…
