Sound Fixed but New Issue

First has anyone else ran into troubles with Fx 2.0.0.3 and the upgrade Linux Kernel? My Fx keeps crashing after a couple minutes running in the new Kernel. I was able to reboot into the old Kernel and it works fine. I know there has been some issues with video cards on the new Kernel but those were at boot up. I can boot into the new Kernel but when I use Fx it becomes unresponsive after a few minutes and then will come back for may be 10-20 seconds for going unresponsive again. Now the sound issue has drove…

Sound Issues Fixed Themselves?

As a result of the Ubuntu Sound Issues as well as post on the Ubuntu Forums, I had some suggestions as to how to fix my issues. Now this morning I booted directly into Ubuntu and the dangest thing happened, I had sound again. I also have determined that my other sound issue were being caused by as Nogg3r5 put it: “unreliable alpha software”. So far so good, I’ve been using Fx 2 along with Banshee media player all morning. Just wish Foxy Tunes supported Banshee. I did drop the folks at Foxy Tunes a note about this as it…

Ubuntu Sound Issues

Last night I mentioned in the Mounting ‘Data’ Drive & Other Ubuntu Stuff post was having trouble playing music in Rythmbox or Totem when doing anything in Fx3a5pre. So this morning I was going to try using Fx 2.0.0.3 and see if it made a difference. However, when I directly booted (from when I turned the machine on) into Ubuntu, I didn’t have any sound. This has happened a couple nights ago but then last night it was fine. FWIW, below is my Sound Preferences screen. I am using a Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI512 and I also have (but…

Mounting ‘Data’ Drive & Other Ubuntu Stuff

On the Places/Bookmarks now on Fx 3 Alpha 5 post, ‘cd‘ had asked how I was able to finally get my ‘Data’ Drive (now drives as I seemed to have split it into two partitions) mounted. Thanks to spock1982 on the CyberNet Forum I found out that I needed to install the NTFS Configuration Tool. This was a rather simple process, well a lot simpler then reconfiguring the x-server (so I could get the 1440×900 screen resolution) which I screwed up the first time. Luckily I had made a backup and was able to restore my original xorg.conf via the…

Firefox 3.0a5pre in Ubuntu

Okay, I’m back in Ubuntu now! It turned out be as simple as disabling APIC in the BIOS. I downloaded and unpacked (instead of installing) Firefox 3.0a5pre (Fx 3 nightly build). Below are a couple of screen shots (click for full-size in new tab): Firefox 3.0a5pre in Ubuntu (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a5pre) Gecko/20070519 Minefield/3.0a5pre) My Ubuntu Desktop. I am still using the default background. Unlike Windows when your first install and run Ubuntu, your desktop is completely blank. The only two items I have on there right now is the link to Fx 3.0a5pre as well as…

Ubuntu Success…Was Short.

Early I wrote Ubuntu Success!, however now whenever I try to start Ubuntu it won’t start. Either I get a black screen with “Starting…” over if try to do recovery/rescue it does a bunch of stuff then stops after “Enabling IO-APIC IRQs”. I am posting over the Ubuntu Forums and see if they can give me some direction with this issue and why I couldn’t get my “data” drive to work (my Windows XP drive was okay). MagniolaSouth asked in the prior post about screenshots, once I can get it working and find a good screenshot program (FastStone is only…

Ubuntu Success!

Before I went to bed last night I started downloading the alternate desktop CD for Ubuntu. Checked this morning and it has successfully downloaded and as able to burn it onto a CD. Even better I was able to boot from the CD and get Ubuntu installed and working. So as the saying goes, “The third time is the charm!” So far so good. Only minor problem I have had so far is I can’t set my resolution to 1440×900 so I am using 1280×960. Also for whatever reason I can not get Ubuntu to read my data drive. It…

Ubuntu Update

I am going to try again tonight to download the alternate desktop CD for Ubuntu. The responses I had received in the Ubuntu Forums all seemed to agree that my download was bad. Further it seems that many folks had better luck downloading and installing from the alternate instead of the LiveCD. One really good tip I did get from the CyberNet Forums was to burn the ISO no faster than 4X. Also need to say thanks to PDecker for recommending the FREE CDBurnerXP Pro for burning the ISO to CD-R. If all goes well, I hope to have Ubuntu…

Ubuntu Install Problem

I was able to get the new drives installed with some difficulties, but they are installed and working. I was able to download the nearly 700 MB ISO file for Ubuntu and burn it to CD (after two attempts). I could even boot off of this CD (after some tweaking in the BIOS), but after that I run into problems. If I select the option to Run/Install Ubuntu or Check CD for Errors, it will start up by initializing a couple files. After that however I end up with a black screen with a dead cursor (flashes but doesn’t respond…

More About Ubuntu

The other night when I did the entry, New Tag: Ubuntu I had planned on adding more details but never got around to this. Today, MagnoliaSouth posted this comment on this entry: If you do begin trying Ubuntu, are you planning on writing details about your experience with it? I’d be very interested to follow a series such as that. I am so not a programmer and don’t know much about that kind of stuff, but if Ubuntu works well and is compatible with the software/hardware I use, I might consider a switch. First off, yes I do plan on…
