New Flash Update adds Bloatware

Just updated my plugins on my main machine as advised in our post yesterday. When I ran the Adobe Flash Installer,I was asked about how to install updates then when it went to install I noticed it was also installing McAfee Security Scan Plus. I canceled the install (which also deletes the installer file) and went back into Firefox and re-downloaded the installer. Upon running again the first screen was the prompt about how to install updates and then clicking next (or was it continue) takes me to the installation. While it is not unusual for these plugins to come with bloatware,…

Internet Gets a Hall of Fame

Interesting read.        GENEVA, Switzerland — The best revolutionaries eventually find themselves hailed in tributes and enshrined in museums.     So it’s almost inevitable that nearly 30 years after the official birthdate of the internet, some of the net’s best-known pioneers, radicals, and troublemakers are being inducted into the Internet Society’s Hall of Fame… “ More Source:  Epicenter | Wired.com Address : The Internet Gets a Hall of Fame (Including Al Gore!) Windows 8 Logo

As we had posted earlier this week there had been rumors of a new ‘Windows 8’ logo coming. It is now official, Microsoft posted the new logo (as seen below along with the past logos) on Friday afternoon. So the color has gone from a teal to more of turquoise now (or is that Microsoft Blue?) However, as Tom’s Hardware points out, Microsoft still hasn’t acknowledged that ‘Windows 8’ is going to be the official title, not just the code name. …Microsoft hasn’t ever confirmed that Windows 8 will be what the next version of Windows will be called, but…

New ‘Windows’ Logo For Windows 8?

Found this over on Tom’s Hardware and it has me wondering. First off, keep in mind nothing has been officially released by Microsoft, but rumors are that they are going to give the Windows Logo a makeover for the upcoming Windows 8. Now a couple things that this new (and again unofficial) design have be wondering about. First off, I had heard a while back that Microsoft was saying that ‘Windows 8’ was just a code name and the official version may be called something else. Keep in mind Windows 3.1 which was released 20-years ago this March was the…

Follow-Up: Attack Page Mishap

A quick follow-up to our Attack Page Mishap earlier this month. We have discovered the compromise was not with WordPress or the WP Backup Plugin, but instead with the ZenPhoto application. I use Zen Photo for the gallery on my elguru.me site. ZenPhoto released an update on 11/11/11 (a couple days after the attack). Unfortunately, unless I am actually in the admin panel there is no way to know if there is an update. However, they do have a feed on their site I was able to subscribe to that is used for updates. The attack itself was not directly caused…

omni.jar to become omni.ja

Bug 701875 was created a few days ago to address a major issue with Windows and Gecko 2.0 (Firefox 4.0+/Thunderbird 5.0+). omni.jar is a core file for Gecko 2.0 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. From MDN: Firefox 4 and Thunderbird 3.3 achieve performance improvements by moving many of their internal parts from being standalone files or sets of JAR files into just one JAR file called omni.jar; this reduces the amount of I/O needed to load the application. This issue is no fault of Mozilla’s rather Microsoft Windows. It seems the Window’s System Restore does not backup .jar files. Trying…

Mac User with Mouse Pointer Problems

A Mac user recently contacted The Guru regarding Mouse Pointer problems which had started earlier in the week. Since I have really no idea what is causing this and also since I am not a Mac user, I am re-posting their contact in hopes that one of our readers will have an idea as to what is going on. I am using Firefox 7.0.1 Release Update Channel [Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1] on a MAC PRO. NOTE: This issue does NOT affect SAFARI web browser. Safari works fine. This issue concerns only FIREFOX. Problem: 1….
