As part of our New Years updating we have decided to remove the Wiki. The biggest reasons were that it duplicated content already on the blog; it was getting too time consuming to maintain/update the wiki application; new content was not being added in a timely matter. As a result a new How-To section has been added to the blog. This page lists all the posts with the category of Tips & Tweaks > How-To and will always be up-to-date. Also on this page is information about editing the userChrome/userContent files, using the built-in preferences manager (about:config) as well as…

Over the holidays we finally made some much needed updates to the blog. One of the biggest changes was moving off of the obsolete Weaver theme to the new (and very much improved) Weaver II theme. The color scheme has been updated to more closely match that of out main site. Some other new features and fixes include: When sharing a post on Facebook, the site logo is now the default thumbnail image. Previously Facebook would pick several images from the blog, none of which were the site logo. The correct Favicon should now show in all browsers. Consolidated share…
Ads on websites are a bit of a touchy subject. Sites do need money to stay ‘alive’ and advertising (and in our case as well donations) helps pay the bills. However, there is a limit to what can be consider acceptable. Small non-intrusive text (or even image based) ads are good. Pop-ups, pop-unders and Flash based ads are what can be consider intrusive. Starting with Adblock Plus (ABP) 2.0 for Firefox and Chrome, ‘non-intrusive ads’ will be shown by default. This can be turned off via the ABP preferences and if your are using a ‘privacy’ filter, those ads likely…
A quick follow-up to our Attack Page Mishap earlier this month. We have discovered the compromise was not with WordPress or the WP Backup Plugin, but instead with the ZenPhoto application. I use Zen Photo for the gallery on my elguru.me site. ZenPhoto released an update on 11/11/11 (a couple days after the attack). Unfortunately, unless I am actually in the admin panel there is no way to know if there is an update. However, they do have a feed on their site I was able to subscribe to that is used for updates. The attack itself was not directly caused…
Over the past couple days, we have gone through and updated the Wiki. The Extensions section has been updated for Firefox 7.0 and 8.0 compatibility and about a dozen new extensions that have already been discussed on the blog were added. The Firefox Tweaks section has also been updated for Firefox 7.0 and 8.0 compatibility. Also we have re-formatted the tweak pages, doing away with the color-code Firefox version compatibility and adding an updated date at the bottom of each page. Now each tweak will show Works with: followed by the version number. Old Compatibility Listing Design Firefox 3.6: YES …
We’ve made it easier to get to us on Facebook now. We can now be found at facebook.com/ffextensionguru. We are also trying to add more content such as the recent poll about App Tabs to go along with the posts earlier today about this often unknown or misused feature in Firefox 4 and newer.
The tweaks and extensions sections on the Firefox Extensions Guru’s Wiki have been updated to reflect compatibility for Firefox 8 Nightly (8.0a1) Builds. Another ‘extensions check update’ will be performed in about 2-weeks on the wiki.
Some of you may have noticed we made a slight change to the color scheme on the FF Extension Guru Wiki. We had noticed the links were not visible and have since made them more visible. We have also made the following improvements: Search widget is now at the top of the page instead of down in the footer. Removed old Links section. Links to Browser & Clients and Open-Source Software are now in the footer. Resource page has been completely redesigned. There are now links to current, past and developmental Firefox releases. Also provided links to support forums and…
While we did say that we had ‘no big plans’ for this year we are launching a new category, Firefox for Mobile. This category is going to be reserved for release and support information as well as extension reviews for the Firefox for Mobile browser aka Fennec. We have also created a ‘mobile friendly’ version of the blog at https://blog.ffextensionguru.mobi. For added convenience there is a mobile barcode link on the sidebar. Please note: content is automatically transferred from the traditional blog to the mobile friendly blog. However, there may be up to an 1-hour delay in new content appearing on…
On May 1, 2006, a blog was born. The Firefox Extension Guru’s Blog that is. We debuted on Blogger but within a few months moved over to WordPress. The big Firefox news back in 2005 was the upcoming Firefox 2.0 due out later that year as well as the collapse of an anti-spam extension and the decision not to include Places in Firefox 2. I was never really sure if the blog would last, but it has continued to grow. Currently averages around 1500 views per day. That did peak to nearly 3000 views on they day of and following…
