Mozilla Messaging has released the next version of Thunderbird on April 24th, 2012. For information about what’s new and fixes in Thunderbird 12, see the release notes. Users can update via Help > About Thunderbird, or download and update manually via getthunderbird.com site. The next scheduled release is Thunderbird 13 on June 5th which may be the last version to support Windows 2000 and XP SP1 or older. Important: Thunderbird 3.1.x is no longer supported.
A warning to Thunderbird 3.1.x users the last release is coming on April 24 when the 3.1.x branch will finally be retired. This comes nearly a year after Thunderbird 5 was released last spring and is almost twice as long as Mozilla normally continues to provide support of older versions after a major release. Mozilla Messaging release the scheduled update for Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.x branch on March 14, 2012. This release addressed security issues. Thunderbird 3.1.X user can update via Help > Check for Updates or user can download and manually install Thunderbird 3.1.20 form here. Next and final release for Thunderbird 3.1 will be Thunderbird 3.1.21 on April 24th, 2012.
Mozilla has opted to err on the side of caution and has announced the delay of this Tuesday’s planned Firefox releases. Since Mozilla normally pairs up the Thunderbird releases with Firefox, this week’s planned Thunderbird releases will likely be delayed as well. These include the release of Thunderbird 11.0, 10.0.3 ESR and 3.1.20 builds. A couple reasons for this delay: Possible conflicts (as has happened in the past) with Microsoft’s Windows Update Tuesdays. Due to bug 720346 there may still be some updating issues when trying to update from Thunderbird 10.0.0esr to the newly released Thunderbird 10.0.1esr. This bug does NOT affect the regular desktop versions of Thunderbird 10.0.0. No word yet when this may be fixed. If needed users can manually download and install Thunderbird 10.0.1esr here.
