No Auto-Update to Thunderbird 17.0.2esr

Due to Mozilla skipping the 17.0.1esr branch for Thunderbird, automatic updates to this version will not work at this time. Users have two options, download and manually install Thunderbird 17.0.2esr over 17.0.0esr or wait until February 19th when Thunderbird 17.0.3esr will be released with a patch to address this update issue. Note: This does not affect the regular (non-organization) version of Thunderbird. User can auto-update from Thunderbird 17.0.0 to 17.0.2 via Help > About Thunderbird and clicking the Check for updates button.

Due to the changes in the development plans for Thunderbird announced last year, Mozilla has changed the numbering scheme of future Thunderbird releases. Most of us were expecting to see Thunderbird 18 (built off of Gecko 18) released on January 8th, but instead were updated to 17.0.2 version. Future Thunderbird releases for the most part are going to be maintenance updates and not actually being built off a new version of Gecko has been the case since the introduction of RapidRelease back in May 2011. Mozilla has released Thunderbird 17.0.2 on January 8, 2013. Note: version numbering of Thunderbird is now going to follow that of the Thunderbird ESR branch. This updated will include minor bug and address a security issues. For organizations, Thunderbird 17.0.2esr has also been released. A warning to Thunderbird 3.1.x users the last release is coming on April 24 when the 3.1.x branch will finally be retired. This comes nearly a year after Thunderbird 5 was released last spring and is almost twice as long as Mozilla normally continues to provide support of older versions after a major release.
