New to Thunderbird 45 is the addition of Correspondents column combining Sender and Recipient with an arrow on the left side of the email address. This ‘feature’ was request about 16-years ago (read all about it in Bug 36489). As I mentioned in the previous post, it is not the name change that bothers me, rather it is the arrow that was added. After some reading the later comments I found out the ‘From’ column was not removed, simply hidden and replaced by Correspondents. The fix to this is very easy and it does not involve add-ons or even custom CSS coding: Right-click anywhere on…

Also introduced in Thunderbird 38 (38.0.1) was the ability to use Maildir mailbox format. Like OAuth2, this too has not been very well documented. I have no idea what this does or why you would want to use it. Further, I have not tried it, especially after I found this information on the Mozilla Wiki with the warning about enabling said feature: Though, we aren’t sure of the side-effects of using maildir as the default store on a profile that was created on Berkeley mailbox(mbox) format; so we suggest you to create a fresh profile to work with maildir so as to avoid…
When Mozilla released Thunderbird 38 (38.0.1) on June 11th one of the new features was being able to use GMail within Thunderbird without having to go into your GMail account and enable the ‘less secure authentication’. Problem is, how to enable this feature in Thunderbird is poorly documented. After some searching, I found the answer in an unlikely place…the comments on the article from The Mozilla Thunderbird Blog announcing Thunderbird 38: In an existing GMail account, you can switch the “Authentication Method” from “Normal Password” to “Oauth2″ (in both the IMAP and SMTP setup separately). Connection security should be SSL/TLS. If…
For some odd reason AdBlock Plus in Thunderbird choose to use the keyboard CTRL+SHIFT+V to open the sidebar (blockable items). The problem with using this is CTRL+SHIFT+V is the universal keyboard shortcut to Paste as Plain Text of Paste without Formatting. After some searching I found a thread from October 2012 on the Adblock Plus Forums that provided a solution: From within Thunderbird go to Tools > Options > Advanced (OS X: Thunderbird > Preferences… | Linux: Edit > Preferences) and then click the Config Editor… button in the lower right of the Options/Preferences Window. If needed click the I’ll be careful, I promise…
Over the past few years I’ve been following Claus’s Grand Stream Dreams Blog as he has posted many Firefox and Chrome along with computer/cyber security tips. Today he has posted a performance tip for Thunderbird: W6161X (or how to recover from Thunderbird slowness). I haven’t really had any slowness issue with Thunderbird on my main Windows 8 machine. However, I have only had this Windows 8 machine for a little under a year so Thunderbird hasn’t had a chance to get bogged down yet. Nonetheless, I noticed a bit of a performance increase after making the two Config Editor (about:config for…
” I have configured the Thunderbird email client to block links from being opened when I click on them. This may sound strange to some as it makes it less convenient to open links posted in emails but it improves the security of the system.“Some Thunderbird users may on the other hand experience issues opening links in emails even though they’d prefer that to be available to them. If you are one of them read on how to fix the issue in the email client. Note that this is just one of the solutions and that it may not be…
” The big news of the day is another batch of Google services that get axed by the company. Among the services this time is Google Sync which will be disabled for the majority of users on January 30, 2013. Google suggests to use CardCav and CalDav as alternatives along with Imap to sync date between devices, and I thought it would be great to demonstrate how you can make use of those options to synchronize data with the Thunderbird email client. … “ Source: Ghacks.net Address : Sync Google contacts with Thunderbird using CardDav
There are a couple useful extensions that will undo the UI changes introduced in Thunderbird 17 as well as the changes to the tabs back with Thunderbird 11. Both of these will work together fine, or you can install on or the other depending on how you would like your Thunderbird UI to be setup. Rise of the Tools - Moves the tabs below the menu bar. Thunderbird still does not have a ‘Tabs on Top’ option that can be changed via the View Menu like that in Firefox. No Restart Needed Title Bar Tabs Cleaner - Restores the Windows Title…
UPDATE: There was a typo in the preference name published earlier the correct preference name is mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar. This works on all versions of Windows, not just XP There are some scattered reports that Windows XP users are having issues with the new ‘Draw Tabs in Title Bar’ feature as part of the updated UI aka Australia project. Something got botched with either Bug 771816 or 775793 resulting in a messed up and unusable UI. While Mozilla get this sorted out Windows XP users should be able to disable the ‘Draw Tabs in Title Bar’ feature (and restore the Title Bar)…
Lightning will auto-update to version 1.9 when Thunderbird checks add-on compatibility during the update. However, Goggle Calendar users will need to manually update to Provider for Google Calendar add-on to version 0.18 in order to get their Google Calendar(s) to work again in Thunderbird 17. To update go to Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > select Lighting and right-click and select Find Updates. After restart your Google Calendar(s) will show up in Thunderbird again.
