Thunderbird 38.4.0 has not yet been released. Reviewing the notes from the status meeting on November 3rd, the release was planned for around November 5th. This delay is not unusual and likely we will be seeing the Thunderbird 38.4.0 release during this coming week. While going through the meeting notes did notice bug 1211160 which had to do with ‘some’ users who updated to Thunderbird 38.3 with Lightning 4.0.3 enabled lost use of the buttons in Thunderbird. Users reported that rolling back to Thunderbird 38.2.0 resolved the issue. Other uses reported success by disabling Lightning 4.0.3 prior to updating to the…

The “Hibernation Bugs‘ which affected Thunderbird’s ability to fetch new mail as well as Lightning after coming out of hibernation (or sleep) have been fixed and will be included in the Thunderbird 38.3.0 release on Tuesday, September 22nd.
There are a couple issues with Thunderbird 38.2.0 when starting up from a long sleep or hibernate (especially overnight). First is Bug 1196662 Thunderbird not checking for mails and becomes unresponsive after hibernation (problem is caused by upgrade to Thunderbird 38.2.0). While I have not experienced issues Thunderbird becoming unresponsive I have noticed I need to click the ‘Get Messages Button’ in order to ‘kick-start’ Thunderbird to periodically and automatically check for new messages. Second which appears to be related to the first and affects those who are using Lighting: Bug 1199994 Today pane date incorrect after overnight hibernate [TypeError: this.mDeferred is null]. I have…
Apparently someone thought it would be a good idea to introduce extension signing into Mozilla Thunderbird. At the end of May 2015 Magnus Melin filed Bug 1168571: consider force signing add-ons requirements on in beta/release for thunderbird (too). So Mozilla is going to shoot themselves in the other foot if they are stupid enough to do this. A couple interesting points against this: Unlike Firefox, Thunderbird does not have issues with rogue add-ons Thunderbird dropped the ESR Branch a while back which would likely have to be reintroduced in order to support proprietary enterprise add-ons that shouldn’t be hosted on AMO. It…
Mozilla released the next scheduled update for the Thunderbird 38.x branch with 38.2.0 on August 14, 2015. There have been some changes to this version for increased stability. CHANGED: Hardware acceleration is now disabled by default to avoid crashing Thunderbird FIXED: A few bugs have been fixed to avoid crashing Thunderbird UNRESOLVED: The “maildir” storage type can no longer be set through the UI due to various issues. Power users can still set the storage type using the config editor. The next planned update for the Thunderbird 38.x branch will be around September 22nd with Thunderbird 38.3.0 release. Users can update…
I had talked about OAuth2 briefly a couple weeks ago, but hadn’t really tried it since my Gmail accounts were already setup in Thunderbird. A few days ago I created another Gmail account to handle everything associated with my Firefox Blog as well as Bugzilla emails. I had been using an @ffextensionguru.com address I had setup up through my hosting provider. The problem is this provider only does POP for free. If I want IMAP support then I needed to upgrade to a business email (5 Boxes with Unlimited Space) for about $96 / year. Since I monitor this email address on…
The machine I upgraded to Windows 10 on Saturday did not have Thunderbird installed. I did a clean install of Thunderbird 38.1.0 with a clean profile. Upon first run I noticed Lightening was already there along with some options at the bottom: First run of a fresh install of Thunderbird 39.1.0 I like the way Mozilla has this setup that you can either keep or disable Lightning. This is what they should have done with Pocket in Firefox.
I reported last week that Windows 10 has changed the way you setup your Default Apps. The biggest change is this has to be done within Windows System Settings, not from within the application. If you attempt to have the application to tell Windows it wants to be the default application you will get this annoying and unhelpful message: For Firefox, Mozilla has implemented a change coming with Firefox 40 that will open the Default Apps setting in Windows 10 when the user tries to make Firefox the default browser within Firefox. This is needed because it appears when a user…
Also introduced in Thunderbird 38 (38.0.1) was the ability to use Maildir mailbox format. Like OAuth2, this too has not been very well documented. I have no idea what this does or why you would want to use it. Further, I have not tried it, especially after I found this information on the Mozilla Wiki with the warning about enabling said feature: Though, we aren’t sure of the side-effects of using maildir as the default store on a profile that was created on Berkeley mailbox(mbox) format; so we suggest you to create a fresh profile to work with maildir so as to avoid…
