Mozilla Messaging competed the merge for Thunderbird 13 Beta on April 26th and Thunderbird 14 Earlybird on April 27th. Existing Earlybird and Beta users can update (within the same build) to the newest version by going to Help > About Thunderbird (or Earlybird). Users wanting to move from the Earlybird to Beta, Beta to Earlybird or do not currently have a version of Thunderbird Earlybird or Beta installed will need to manually update via The Future of Thunderbird site. One of the big new features (as far as the developers were concerned) with Thunderbird 11 was having the tabs on top. It is suppose to “facilitates navigation and make it more contextual”. Existing Earlybird user may be able to update within the application via Help > About Earlybird (at press time the updater was not working) otherwise you can manually download and install Earlybird from here. Thunderbird 12 is scheduled for release on April 23, 2012. Lightning Users: You will need to manually update to Lightning 1.4b1 via the Calendar Versions site.

Back in July we wrote that support for Windows 2000 and XP SP1 would be ending with the Thunderbird 8 release (November 8, 2011) due to Mozilla moving to C++ 2010 compiler. Thunderbird 10 was released on January 31st and still supports Windows 2000 as well as all versions of Windows XP. Bug 563318 (switch Firefox trunk builds to use Visual C++ 2010) has had landed on the Firefox 13 Nightly builds (has been temporarily backed out to address some crash issues). As we had reported last night, the next build was going to contain a patch to fix the issue with mozglue.dll error message. After installing a fresh copy of the 2012-01-28 Earlybird build, everything is working again. Users will need to update manually to the newest build of Earlybird by downloading and installing a fresh copy from Thunderbird Channels page. There is no reason to uninstall the prior build, simply just install over with today’s build.

There is a critical bug in the January 27, 2012 build of Thunderbird Earlybird (11.0a2) which is preventing the application from launching on Windows. This is believed to be the result of the check in of Bug 701371 - Rename mozutils to mozglue, and move it to top-level. A patch has been created and uploaded for the next build. Users who have already updated to the broken build will get the message below along with a Windows ‘Program Stopped Working/Responding’ message.
