Due to the changes in the development plans for Thunderbird announced last year, Mozilla has changed the numbering scheme of future Thunderbird releases. Most of us were expecting to see Thunderbird 18 (built off of Gecko 18) released on January 8th, but instead were updated to 17.0.2 version. Future Thunderbird releases for the most part are going to be maintenance updates and not actually being built off a new version of Gecko has been the case since the introduction of RapidRelease back in May 2011. The numbering is now going to follow that of The Thunderbird ESR (extended support release) aka Thunderbird for Organizations which…

Mozilla Messaging released a security update to all versions of Thunderbird 10 on February 16, 2012. The Thunderbird 10.0.2 security release addresses a bug in the lipng reference library which could cause an integer overflow or truncation. This in turn could be exploited and could result in execution of arbitrary code on a victim’s system when viewing a specially crafted PNG image in an affected mail client. More info here. Users can update via Help > About Thunderbird or manually update and install from getthunderbird.com
Due to bug 720346 there may still be some updating issues when trying to update from Thunderbird 10.0.0esr to the newly released Thunderbird 10.0.1esr. This bug does NOT affect the regular desktop versions of Thunderbird 10.0.0. No word yet when this may be fixed. If needed users can manually download and install Thunderbird 10.0.1esr here. The next scheduled update for Thunderbird 10.0esr will be Thunderbird 10.0.2esr on March 13th. Back in July we wrote that support for Windows 2000 and XP SP1 would be ending with the Thunderbird 8 release (November 8, 2011) due to Mozilla moving to C++ 2010 compiler. Thunderbird 10 was released on January 31st and still supports Windows 2000 as well as all versions of Windows XP. Bug 563318 (switch Firefox trunk builds to use Visual C++ 2010) has had landed on the Firefox 13 Nightly builds (has been temporarily backed out to address some crash issues). This also means the Comm-Central (Thunderbird Daily) channel would have had the same update. So those who are…
