Back in July we wrote that support for Windows 2000 and XP SP1 would be ending with the Thunderbird 8 release (November 8, 2011) due to Mozilla moving to C++ 2010 compiler. Thunderbird 10 was released on January 31st and still supports Windows 2000 as well as all versions of Windows XP. Bug 563318 (switch Firefox trunk builds to use Visual C++ 2010) has had landed on the Firefox 13 Nightly builds (has been temporarily backed out to address some crash issues). This also means the Comm-Central (Thunderbird Daily) channel would have had the same update. So those who are…

I realize the last post, Thunderbird ESR Released was a bit brief. I had been waiting to post about the new ESR build until I knew for sure they were going to be released. I had seen in a couple places that they were scheduled for release on January 31st. I had not seen much about this most of the day and I just happened to be lurking around the Builds forums during a break in my Networking Class tonight when I saw they had been released. I will be having more information about these builds tomorrow and some other…

Mozilla has announced Thunderbird will follow the Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) plan. The current plan is the first Firefox ESR will be based off of the upcoming Firefox 10 release coming at the end of this month. With that release comes a 12-week ‘grace-period’ for continued support of the Firefox 3.6 release which would put the final release on April 24th, 2012. However, Thunderbird has been a bit slower to adapt to new release processes (the first rapid release cycle release was Thunderbird 6). It is uncertain at this time if the first Thunderbird ESR will be based off…

As mentioned today on our Firefox Blog, support for Firefox 3.6 will be likely ending in late April 2012. However, the Enterprise/Thunderbird/ExtendedSupport has not been refined yet. It still states, We intend to conclude on this subject within two weeks in order to be able to offer Thunderbird ESR 1.0 at the same time that Thunderbird 8 or 9 is released. Thunderbird 3.1 will be declared end-of-life 12 weeks after the release of Thunderbird ESR 1.0. Given that Firefox (though not yet official) has decided to make Firefox 10 the first ESR, it would seem logical that Thunderbird would follow…
