Bug 701875 was created a few days ago to address a major issue with Windows and Gecko 2.0 (Firefox 4.0+/Thunderbird 5.0+). omni.jar is a core file for Gecko 2.0 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. From MDN: Firefox 4 and Thunderbird 3.3 achieve performance improvements by moving many of their internal parts from being standalone files or sets of JAR files into just one JAR file called omni.jar; this reduces the amount of I/O needed to load the application. This issue is no fault of Mozilla’s rather Microsoft Windows. It seems the Window’s System Restore does not backup .jar files. Trying…
Thunderbird 3.3 (Miramar)
After nearly a year in development, Mozilla/Mozilla Labs has released Thunderbird 5.0 on June 28th. As mentioned prior to keep the version numbering the same across all products, there was not a Thunderbird 4.0 release. Further during early development this was labeled as Thunderbird 3.3 Alpha. Users who’s computers meet these system requirements should be prompted to update with in 24-48 hours or Windows user can go to Help > Check For Updates… and should be presented with an update offer (see below). Please note, some add-ons may not yet be working with Thunderbird 5.0. See this post for more…
Mozilla Labs has released an update for Thunderbird 3.1 on June 21st. This release addressed: Several security and stability issues. For more information and to download see the Thunderbird 3.1.11 Release Notes. IMPORTANT! Support for Thunderbird 3.0 has ended! Upgrade to Thunderbird 3.1. Support for Gecko 1.9.2/Thunderbird 3.1 will continue with a 3.1.12 release. Thunderbird 5.0 (formerly Miramar/Thunderbird 3.3) is scheduled with a tentative release date in about one-week on June 28th.
In a post couple weeks ago, we did mention about the numbering change for the next Thunderbird release (Miramar) going from 3.3a to 5.0b. However, we have received several questions related to the whereabouts of Thunderbird 4. Simply put there will NOT be a Thunderbird 4.0 version. The reason for this is because Mozilla wants the Firefox, SeaMonkey and Thunderbird to be on the same development cycle which also includes the same version numbering. Currently Firefox is on version 4.0.*, so why not make Miramar Thunderbird 4.0? A couple reasons, Miramar is not ready for release yet (estimated release date…
Bug 531088: ‘Need warning and UI for destructive POP3 default setting’ has been around since the Thunderbird 3 days (November 2009) and is still listed as one of the two critical bugs in the Daily Builds threads on the mozillaZine Thunderbird Builds forum. Here is a brief summary of this bug (issue): By default when a new POP3 account is setup in Thunderbird 3 and newer, the server settings are such that messages will be removed from the server after 14-days from when they are downloaded. Plus, no where during the setup process of their account in Thunderbird are the…
I mentioned over on the Firefox Blog about a thread in the Thunderbird Builds forum asking if there is a possibility of being able to have toolbar (icons) next to the tabs like in Firefox. They posted the following mockup of how they would like this to look in Thunderbird (note they are using Small Icons and have the ‘Show:’ setting as Icons): At first I really didn’t understand what they were asking or why you want to do this. However, the more I got to looking at this, the more I would like to see this feature. This is…
We described in the Thunderbird 5 Beta 1 Released post how to override Add-on Compatibility Checking by adding and setting the following Boolean entry to FALSE in Thunderbird’s about:config: extensions.checkCompatibility.5.0b There has been some isolated reports that after restarting Thunderbird users see the message: Add-on compatibility checking is disabled. You may have incompatible add-ons in Thunderbird’s add-on manager. However, their add-ons are stuck in a Disabled status. This is caused by Thunderbird’s extension files become corrupted. Simple fix to get your add-ons working again: Close Thunderbird Locate your profile folder Delete the following files from your profile folder. Note: You…
Mozilla Labs has released the first beta of Thunderbird 5 (formerly Thunderbird 3.3) on June 2, 2011. Mozilla Labs should be releasing the first beta for Thunderbird 5 (Miramar) later today. Important: To match up with the current version numbering of Firefox, Miramar has been renumbered from 3.3 during the Alpha builds to 5.0 for Beta builds and final release. Further Thunderbird has skipped version 4.0.
